Innovation Recognised

HORIZONS Regional Council has received two national awards for its BIG GREEN RIG which was custom built by Mike Christie Sheetmetals.
The 14 tonne mobile education unit has won a New Zealand Post award for excellence in technological innovation at the SOLGM (NZ Society of Local Government Managers) awards and a top award for excellence in innovation at the ALGIM (Association of Local Government Information) conference.
The project has been recognised for “phenomenal creativity of design”. The mobile environmental education unit was first launched in May 2007. More than 30,000 people have enjoyed interactive games and education presentations aboard and about its impressive 13.9 metre interior
Mike Christie says he and the workshop team loved building this trailer unit, working with a science team from Horizons to create it and feel privileged to have been able to make such an enormous and visible contribution to ‘green education’ in the lower north island.
